More information about the A378 road closure for roadworks

The current proposal is to finally complete the A378 Mile Head drainage improvement scheme, starting from Monday 3 February – Friday 21 February 2020 with the upgrade of 270metres of highway surface water drainage pipe in the carriageway. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this type of work, a trench will have to be excavated to remove the existing pipe and to replace it with a new 300mm (9”) pipe at approximate depth of 0.75-1.0 metre.  Also, several gully cross drain pipes, running diagonally across the road, will be repaired.
This means the road will have to remain closed for the duration of the works, as with these types of deep excavations it will not be safe to open the road to traffic outside of this construction period i.e. at night, during this 3-week period and a hard closure will be implemented at either end of the works site.
Also, at same time and in advance of surface dressing works proposed for the A378 Wrantage this summer, it is intended to take advantage of the road closure at A378 Mile Hill and carry out the necessary localised patch repairs to the road surface required in preparation of the surface dressing later this year. Whilst this work is carried out certain movement restrictions will be in placed to protect the workforce in the road, but local access will available to the residents and businesses within this area.
