Fire Danger

The local farmers have reported a spate (5 or 6) of fires at the entrances to their fields near Curry Mallet in which crops of wheat or barley are now ripening and tinder-dry; Devon & Somerset Fire Service have been called out on several occasions.

These fires have occurred during broad day-light and, given the prevailing weather conditions, may have been caused by discarded glass bottles or cigarette butts. Given the proximity of arable fields to residential housing, and therefore the potential danger to people and property, quite apart from smoke and traffic dislocation from crop fires, there is reasonable cause for concern.

Please be especially vigilant and to ring the Fire Service should you become aware of smoke rising from unusual locations.
Thank you.
